Alex Ferguson has revealed that Real Madrid made only one official bid for Cristiano Ronaldo and does not expect the rift between the two clubs to heal quickly.

The fiery Scot was incensed over the summer when the Spanish giants publicly tried to prise the Portuguese star away from Old Trafford before eventually being unable to land their man.

Now Ferguson has said that United turned the one offer that they actually received and that the manner in which Madrid had operated had mean that the problems could long-lasting.

"We haven't had any recent contact with Real Madrid. Has there been any attempt to heal the rift? Yeah, that will be right," Sky Sports quoted him as saying.

"They put a bid in. I don't know if it was fax or letter or whatever. Just one. It was sometime in the summer.

"But the final decision was taken at the end of the season when the first nonsense appeared and Cristiano referred to his future being decided in the next few days.

"It was decided there and then he was staying. There was never any change in our stance."

Ronaldo has publicly pledged to stay at United, but now Madrid are rumoured to be ready to sue the player for refusing to join them after allegedly agreeing a deal.

Deaspite that, Ferguson is confident that the matter is closed and that the player can focus solely on playing for the Red Devils next season.

"I think we will just let the thing settle down now. It will take its course," he continued.

"The whole business will settle down, he will realise he is at a great club. It will sort itself out, his future will sort itself out."
