STEGERSBACH, Austria, - An unlucky Austria goalkeeper who finds out on Wednesday he has not made the number one spot for Euro 2008 should learn from Germany's Oliver Kahn, Austria coach Josef Hickersberger said on Tuesday.

Hickersberger will tell either Alexander Manninger or Juergen Macho they are his first choice 'keeper after delaying what he called his 'gut decision' until three days before the tournament kick-off on Saturday.

'The second goalkeeper should take Oliver Kahn as an example,' the coach told a news conference at the team's base in Stegersbach, recalling the battle for the German goalkeeper spot in 2006 when Germany hosted the World Cup.

'Two years ago [Kahn's] humanity came much more to the fore because of the way he behaved after hearing from Juergen Klinsmann that Jens Lehmann would be the number one,' he added.

Manninger and Macho were tested in Austria's friendlies against Nigeria and Malta last week, which resulted in a 1-1 draw with the African side and a 5-1 win over Malta.

The 60-year-old coach has been consistently tight-lipped about his thinking in the run-up to the tournament and waited until a deadline last week before reducing his squad from 31 to 23 as required.

Martin Harnik, a surprise inclusion in the squad, told reporters on Tuesday he had trouble getting into his stride when he came on as a substitute against Malta. But he went on to score in extra-time, a huge boost to his confidence, he said.

The 20-year-old who can play as a forward or in midfield, and has even been used in defence in club football, said he would prefer to be played in attack.

Meanwhile, defender Emanuel Pogatetz missed training on Tuesday due to a light calf injury but Hickersberger said he expected him to make a quick recovery and join Wednesday's training.

Austria begin their campaign in Vienna on Sunday against Croatia in Group B. Germany and Poland complete the group.

The Euro 2008 co-hosts are ranked 101st in the world, way below any of the other competing teams.
